Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Usui Reiki System

Reiki is a technique of hands-on healing. It is not based on any Religious system or philosophy. It has no dogmas or creeds of its own. Literally speaking, it is a Japanese ideogram used to describe different healing and sacred methods. It can be interpreted as free passage of Universal and Vital Energy. In the West, Reiki is best known as "The Usui System of Universal Energy", in honor of the Japanese Monk who discovered it, Dr Usui.

Literally speaking, Reiki is the union of two words. "Rei" can be translated as spiritual Consciousness, universal, love, spirit, the highest energy in the universe and more. Ms. Takata said that, probably, the best meaning for "Rei" is "universal", showing that Reiki is everywhere, all the time. This energy knows who needs it, when and why! Reiki Masters channel this energy and attune others to it. "Ki" means vital energy. It is the energy that animates all living things. It is all around us and within us. In human beings, ki helps to promote our physical, mental and emotional balance and well-being. The healthier someone is, the more ki energy one has. Proportionally, when someone is sick, this energy is greatly decreased in our body. When someone dies, one loses completely all his vital energy.

Reiki cannot be learned in Books, Internet or via oral transmission alone. Although nowadays we can find many books on the subject and learn about the sacred symbols and the hand positions through second-hand means; the true power of Reiki can be transmitted only from a qualified Master to a student via sacred initiations, when the student is directly attuned to the Healing Reiki energies.

These initiations, or attunements, work in a similar way to an ordinary healing session. In the same way that a healer can pass on energy for healing purposes and even cure a person, he can also impart the ability to cure to others. Only after the Reiki attunements, the student may be able to use effectively the Reiki energies for self-healing, healing others, animals and situations.

Unfortunately, Reiki and many other healing and spiritual techniques have been quite misinterpreted - not to say misused! - in the West. When Reiki first arrived to this side of the world, it was transmitted only by few Masters, who taught it with great respect and an enormous sense of responsibility. It would take several years until you could become a master. Nowadays you can become a Reiki Master in as short a period as one month! Probably already forecasting what was about to happen, the Japanese lady who brought Reiki to the West, Ms Takata, introduced the high fee of $10.000 to give the Master degree to students. She was, then, extremely criticized by many. I do believe, though, that she did so in order to safeguard this sacred system of healing.

For all these reasons, the beginner students should be very cautious in choosing their teacher. This, of course, goes to any studies one wishes to endeavor. Particularly, though, when dealing with energetic/spiritual studies. Many of the things you will hear in the courses of these fields are subjective and abstract. Weekend "so-called" masters abound, offering unrealistic promises and immediate enlightenment! They base their knowledge more in second-hand information and in belief-systems than in inner experience and exploration. It is essential to have discernment and not to take anything for granted. The path of self-development and self-realization is usually a long and arduous one, demanding immense self-discipline, perseverance and good sense!

Science is just starting to acknowledge the power of mind and faith, and the effectiveness of different healing techniques. We have a long way to go, though, until science and this subtle and invisible world that is within and all around us make peace with each other, once and for all. Until then, we need to see ourselves as pioneers and seekers of truth. Not the indirect truth found externally of oneself, but that inner truth that is beyond doubt for it comes from the source of our being.

Explore, learn, and absorb all the knowledge that you can. But, above all, don't forget to put it all in practice, to experience it and to feel it, in order to discover where your heart wishes to lead you. You will see that a new world will open up right in front of you. A world of unlimited possibilities and unimaginable beauty and splendor.

Dear Jackie, this afternoon I closed my cupboard's door on my finger! It is a very heavy door, I repeat, one HEAVY door. I suffered torturing pain, pain that makes one want to die... But your brother did not lose his senses! I gave myself right away a "Choku Rei" Reiki session. My beloved teacher, believe it or not, the pain went away on the spot. Simply unbelievable!!! And this was, I remind you, true torturing pain. I am still shocked. By the way, what gave me the idea to give myself Reiki, was the story you told us about your brother who cut his finger with a knife, pretty similar. To be short, I thank you and the wonders of Reiki. Even for a skeptic guy as myself, the energies work. Kisses.
